More than 100 Year Ten students from Sacred Heart College braved the cold for a Friday night sleepout recently. to raise awareness and funds for homelessness.

With nothing more than a cardboard box, sleeping bag and the clothes they were wearing to protect them from the night, the students were given a chilling insight into the reality of more than 9,500 displaced Western Australians.

On any given night, 1 out of 200 Aussies experiences homelessness, with kids younger than 12 making up 17% of the nation’s displaced population.

Rossana Hywood knows all too well the hardships homelessness brings after losing her home and everything in it when Cyclone Tracy tore apart her life in 1974.

“I’ve been there, I know what it’s like and if it wasn’t for organisations like St Vincent De Paul and the Salvation Army I wouldn’t have had clothes, I wouldn’t have had milk for my babies… so it shows just how important it is to give.”

Inspired by those who helped her through the worst, Rossana has been running the Social Justice program at  Sacred Heart College for many years, encouraging the next generation to dig deep and to “just simply care” about those less fortunate.

With winter upon us, the group has been busy organising its Winter Appeal, gathering old jackets, pants, shoes, blankets and making care packs with toiletries, socks and underwear.

The students who participated in the Winter Sleep Out have raised $6,000, all of which will go straight towards the needs of the homeless be it food, clothes or shelter.

You too can help by donating both old winter clothes or money to Vinnies, Salvos, Passages and many others.
