The Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) Gospel Choir will be performing at Christ Church Claremont on 17 May, as a wrap-up to their South West Tour.

The choir has been touring the South West performing in various locations across Bunbury, Albany, and Margaret River.

The choir is made up of students and alumni from the Contemporary Music course at WAAPA.

Choir director, Matt Allen told ECU Daily about the motivations behind sending the group on tour.

“This is something the choir wanted to do to expand our performance portfolio and to reach a new audience,” he said.

Mr Allen said the choir’s music style was something the South West community was unfamiliar with, a new sound they haven’t yet heard.

“A gospel choir is a fairly unique performance group to travel down to Bunbury, Margaret River and Albany. They said they had never heard anything like this and couldn’t wait for us to come back.

“We are fortunate enough to have an amazing group of students, vocally and personally. They are a brilliant group to work with and there is a huge sense of team work and commitment with lots of positive fun and vibes.”

Choir member, Nicolette Chew, told ECU Daily about the significance of gospel music.

“It’s the only type of music that we sing that is truly not about us. Whether you are religious or not, it is a joyful and spiritual experience every time.

“Singing with an incredible group of professional musicians is so unique. You rarely get more than 20 professional singers in a room singing a song that has nothing to do with personal glorification. It is one of my favourite projects that I’m a part of,” she said.

Although the tour has now come to an end, the final show is set to be an exciting event.

Mr Allen said the hour-long show should “leave people feeling joyous.”

“We have been working very hard on this over the last few months and can’t wait to show it off to our friends and family in Perth.”

Some of these songs seems to be from another world, you could say heavenly, and we look forward to coming together,” said Ms Chew.

The WAAPA Gospel Choir will also be performing a George Michael at the Astor Theatre on 27 June, along with the Perth Symphony Orchestra.
