The World’s Greatest Shave is back this month, and looks to continue its success as one of Australia’s biggest fundraising events.

The event occurs every March to help raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation in the hope that scientists will find a cure. The Foundation also provides free support to anyone  suffering from the disease.

The Leukaemia Foundation was formed in 1975 and has been helping out people and their families across the country ever since. The World’s Greatest Shave was introduced 23  years later in 1998. On average, this event has over 20,000 participants, who either shave off or colour their hair to help raise money in support of the Leukaemia Foundation.

The event has helped raise more than $200 million dollars since its creation in 1998 and organisers aim to earn another $17 million this year, to help continue the fight to reduce the impact of blood cancer.

Blood cancer is the third most common cause of cancer-related deaths in Australia. With more than 60,000 Australians living with the condition, an estimated 12,500 more will be diagnosed this year.

This amounts to about  35 people every day, and one person every 41 minutes being diagnosed. Leukaemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma, all types of blood cancers,  can develop in anyone at any age.

The Leukaemia Foundation doesn’t just help fund research into a cure for blood cancer, they also provide emotional support to those affected by the disease and their families. They also help regional families, providing a place to stay during treatment, which can take months, if not years.

The World’s Greatest Shave  will take place in the Northbridge Piazza on the corner of Lake and James Street,  running from 5:30 – 7:30 pm on 17 March.

Radio station 92.9FM’s  Hit Crew will be there throughout,  with presenter Ty the event’s MC.

As this is also St Patrick’s Day, expect to see a lot of green hair spray and dye. No bookings are required to partake in the event, just a donation.

If you would like to register a team to participate visit www.worldsgreatestshave.com or call 1800 500 088 for more details.
