Perth will play host to more than 6000 university students participating in the Australian University Games (AUG) this week, with 170 athletes from ECU alone, ready to take on students from 42 universities across Australia.

Student athletes will compete in 34 sports over the six-day event, ranging from traditional athletics, swimming, basketball and hockey to newest additions ten pin bowling, ultimate frisbee and ‘esport’ League of Legends.

ECU’s mixed netball team are the reigning Western University Games champions, defeating UWA, Curtin, Murdoch and Notre Dame in Bunbury earlier this year. Captain Troy Young is hoping to add an AUG title to the team’s success.

“We have a mixed bag of talent this year,” he told ECU Daily.

“We have skills ranging from social league to state league and players ranging from 19-34 years.

“It’s a really competitive group and I’m hoping we can make finals.”

The social events look to be just as full on, with Australian DJ/Producer and instrumentalist Timmy Trumpet, the lead act for Sunday night’s Opening Ceremony. Other locations throughout Northbridge that will be free and exclusive to AUG participants  include The Library Nightclub, The Game Sports Bar, Senor Peppers and Leopard Lady.

ECU Captain and touch rugby competitor Zoe George says she’s excited for a week of serious competition and  plenty of fun.

“We’ve been training for a while now and have some really strong talent in the team, so we could have a real chance this week,” George said.

“I think the part we are most looking forward to though is the social events.

“The nights out are what really make you bond as a team and we can’t wait to start and finish the week strong”.

All five Western Australian universities will take part in the Games, as well as Rio Olympian, Michelle Jenneke who will represent the University of Sydney in athletics. Three-time Olympian Eamon Sullivan has been named as the 2016 event patron.

The 2016 University Games is on September 25th to 30th.
